Teaching Tolerance's Mix It Up at Lunch Program, Novemebr 9th

Tomorrow, November 9th, at select schools across the Atlanta area, students will participate in Teaching Tolerance's Mix It Up program. This program is a national campaign that helps K-12 teachers develop inclusive school communities. 

According to the Mix It Up program, students thrive, both socially and academically, in schools that are inclusive. Yet, for far too many students, schools are hotbeds of exclusion. Social scientists have long maintained that contact between diverse groups helps alleviate tensions and reduce prejudice.

Role Models to Supermodels

Druid Hills High School teacher, Andrea Avery, is one of six winners in the Role Models to Supermodels: Jones New York and Macy’s Team Up to Honor contest. Teachers are kicking off fall fashion in A+ style this year by walking in their own fashion show featuring looks from Jones New York in partnership with Macy’s.

After the show, a Jones New York style expert will be on hand to help attendees master their own style using key pieces from the collection.

The fashion show kicks off Shop For Education Week, October 16-23, where 10 percent of the selling price (up to a maximum of $300,000) of apparel sold from Jones New York lines—Collection, Signature, Dress, Suit, and Outerwear—will be donated to Jones New York In The Classroom, a non-profit organization supporting teachers and children’s education.  

The show takes place at Macy’s Lennox Square Mall on October 16th at 2:00 p.m.

Local Student Selected as Google Contest Finalist

St. Pius X freshman Savannah Tully of Snellville has been named one of 400 finalists for the Doodle 4 Google Competition.  The competition, which was held earlier this year, had 20,000 participating schools and over 33,000 entrants from across the United States.  This was Google’s third year sponsoring the competition.

All artwork included the phrase, “If I could do anything, I would…” and the Google logo. Tully decided to complete the phrase with “save the endangered animals.” And her drawing consisted of the face of a tiger, and the word “Google” created the eyes and stripes of the face.

Doodle 4 Google was a competition for students across the country in grades K-12 to use their imaginations when creating the artwork and completing the phrase.

Dynamic Korea: Dance & Song at Emory University

The Chae Hyan Soon Dance Company brings their visually striking “Dynamic Korea: Dance & Song” to Emory University. The movements of Dynamic Korea: Dance & Song reflect the essential rhythms of traditional Korean dance.

The energetic “Taffy Peddler Dance” takes the audience on a journey through bustling Korean marketplaces, while the performances of the “Lotus Dance” and “Monks Dance” explore inner stillness and peace through the country’s Buddhist roots.

While being supervised by artistic director Chae Hyang Soon, the Chae Hyang Soon Dance Company has performed at the Asia Pacific Peach Foundation, the tenth anniversary festival of the Seoul Olympics, the 2002 World Cup, the opening and closing performances of the Winter Universiade and Korea’s presidential inauguration.

“Dynamic Korea: Dance & Song” will be performed at Emory’s Performing Arts Studio (1804 N. Decatur. Rd., Atlanta) on Sat. Sept.

Theater Emory Opens Pulitzer Prize-Winning Season Of Plays With “Rent”

Theater Emory will open its 2010-2011 season focused on Pulitzer Prize-winning plays with the Broadway smash-hit rock musical, “Rent” (Sept. 30-Oct. 3, 2010 Performing Arts Studio, 1804 North Decatur Road). With music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson, this iconic production is based on Giacomo Puccini’s “La Boheme” and follows a bohemian group of young New York artist and musician friends during the height of the AIDS epidemic. Theater Emory has decided to stage the performances in concert version.

“There is a maturity and a more grounded feel,” says music director Bryan Mercer about a concert version of this dynamic music. “There is a different focus and a finer ability for our performers to act through the microphone to project the story to the audience.
