City of Atlanta Hosts Transportation Referendum Info Sessions

Sidewalks, a streetscape in your community or repaving of nearby streets.  This is a small sample from a comprehensive list of transportation planned projects that our citizens would like to see in their community.  The question remains.  How do we fund them? This summer voters within the ten-county Atlanta metropolitan area will decide whether to fund local and regional transportation projects (from an existing list of projects developed from public input) through a regional transportation referendum.

The City of Atlanta is expected to receive a little over $9.0 million per year for ten years to spend on local projects. The City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office, the Departments of Planning and Community Development and Public Works, in coordination with the Atlanta City Council, are working to develop a rolling five-year list of projects to be funded by the 15-percent local allocation, if the referendum passes in July.

MARTA announces holiday schedule changes

ATLANTA -- Before you hop on MARTA bus or rail this holiday weekend, you should be aware of their special schedule through Monday.

Saturday, Dec. 24
MARTA will operate on a regular Saturday schedule. Buses will run from 5 a.m. to 12:30 a.m., while trains will run every 20 minutes on all lines from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.

The Five Points RideStore will be open regular hours (7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.), while the Airport RideStore will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Sunday, Dec. 25
MARTA will operate on a regular Sunday schedule Christmas Day. Bus service will run from 5 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. and trains will operate every 20 minutes from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Both RideStore locations will be closed on Sunday.

Traffic impacted this Sunday due to Atlanta Marathon

 

Expect road closures on Sunday as runners discover Atlanta one mile at a time at the Atlanta Marathon and Marathon Relay on Sunday, October 30, 2011. The 26.2 mile urban course starts and finishes at Atlantic Station taking participants on a tour of Atlanta past well-known Atlanta sites and neighborhoods such as Georgia Tech, Centennial Olympic Park, Georgia Aquarium, Turner Field, Grant Park, Oakland Cemetery, Martin Luther King Center, Piedmont Park, Buckhead and the famous Peachtree Road.

Below are some important resources for spectators and residents / businesses located along the course.

Meet MARTA Day at Five Points Station

ATLANTA – On Wednesday, MARTA riders can share ideas with the General Manager and CEO, Beverly A. Scott, of the Atlanta transit and rail company as a part of the company’s “Meet MARTA Day” effort. The event will be held at the Five Points Station from 4 to 7 p.m.

Tell company executives what, you think, would make MARTA “smarta” and partake in light refreshments, games, giveaways and tons of information. This event is the first in a series of Meet MARTA Days; the next two events will be held at North Springs station and at College Park and Kensington stations.

MARTA customers will also be able to learn about the proposed 2012 transportation sales tax and will have the opportunity to sound-off about Atlanta Regional transportation projects on the docket.

Eco-Fabulous Explored on Beltline Tour

The Atlanta Beltline project is a diverse 2.8 billion project to renovate neighborhoods, parks and commercial space for an area of the city that will be connected by town-car (incorporating old railroad tracks).  The project incorporates nature and neighborhood's existing materials to create a neighborhood that's "eco-fabulous", as our tour guide called it. Brian Leary, the brain behind this project was a college student who was inspired by a similar plan in Paris.

Every Friday and Saturday at 9:30AM, the Atlanta Beltline hosts a free three hour tour along this beltline that highlights the circle that the town cars will transit. Currently, this Beltline tour is reserved for the next year but I was lucky enough to find a seat, due to a cancellation.

I didn't know what to expect on these tours. When I signed up I had never imagined the tour would take three hours out of my Saturday.

GDOT approves $102M in roadwork

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Transportation on Friday approved more than $102 million in 25 new transportation infrastructure improvement and maintenance projects across the state.

"These projects are spread across our state and each one makes an important improvement to the capacity, safety or general condition of our highway system," GDOT Commissioner Vance C. Smith Jr. "And just as, if not more, important, they put millions of dollars into our economy and provide jobs for Georgians."

One of the big projects is in Rome, while another involves highways in Metro Atlanta:

* In Floyd County, $42.6 million will go toward widening 5.5 miles of the West Rome Bypass from south of the Coosa River to north of State Route 20.
