BEST SPOTS: Summer Camps for Kids

BUCKHEAD, Ga. -- For this week’s installment of Best Spots, we've compiled a list of the best summer camps for your children, this year.

Camp Best Friends is accepting applications for the 2011 summer season. The program has been serving children ages 5-16 throughout the metro area for about 30 years. The program is comprised of eight specialty camps, 12 day camps, two traditional teen camps and one pilot teen camp. Camp starts on May 31 and runs until July 22; an extended camp will be held at Adams Park, Peachtree Hills and Rosel Fann Parks and they will start July 25 and August 5. Camp costs $65 per week/per child for Atlanta resident and City of Atlanta employees and $110 for non-residents.

YMCA Centers are the nation’s largest provider of child care services and there are a number of YMCA centers around the metro area. According to their website, YMCA’s provide “family-centered, values-based programs” and they support the “physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of children”. Camp charges vary depending on if membership. Check them out online and find your neighborhood center.

Premier Atlanta childcare provider, Crème de le Crème is offering summertime childcare at all of their area locations. The childcare centers actually take an educational approach and apply it in all of their early childhood development centers. The center has schools in various states around the U.S. Visit them online for more information about the summer programs offered.

Aspiring athletes are all rushing to Elite Hoops Basketball camps around the city. The Elite Hoops will be directing NIKE Basketball Camps across the southeast for players entering grades 3-10. All camps are put through about two hours of Skill Development, 5-on-5 and 3-on-3 games. The Elite Hoops website lists a number of basketball camps in the metro area.

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is hosting a number of Art Camps for students aged 7 to 14. Although, a bit, pricey the program offered at SCAD is a pretty good value. For $225 the program includes all workshop supplies and activities and each session ends with a Parent Showcase which features campers’ work and an ice cream bar. The camp is held Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Galloway School.
