More than 2,000 JROTC cadets from 30 metro Atlanta high schools
to participate in historic fundraising effort

On Saturday, November 3rd and Sunday, November 4th, visitors to metro Atlanta Kroger stores are likely to be met by a smiling, uniformed JROTC cadet with an Empty Stocking Fund logo, as more than 2,000 cadets representing 30 metro Atlanta high schools’ JROTC programs will be working outside metro Kroger stores to raise awareness of and contributions for The Empty Stocking Fund, an Atlanta-based, Atlanta-serving non-profit organization that has been providing holiday gifts to Atlanta’s neediest children since 1926.

Emory Halloween fun begins Thursday

ATLANTA -- Jake's Open House, an Emory Halloween tradition, will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25.

Stop by the Miller-Ward Alumni House for an evening of family-friendly activities, including arts and crafts, games, a bounce house, prizes and more.

Admission to Jake's Open House is free. Refreshments from Mellow Mushroom will be available for purchase.

This event is only the beginning of the Halloween fun at Emory. Other upcoming events include a pumpkin carving contest, a haunted tour and a zombie walk.

Emory historian to lecture on Strom Thurmond at Carter Library

Emory historian to lecture on Strom Thurmond at Carter Library

ATLANTA -- Joseph Crespino, a historian at Emory University and author of Strom Thurmond's America, will give a lecture at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Crespino will discuss Thurmond's rise to power and how his actions in the 1950s and 1960s led to the current rise of the Southern Republican movement.

DECATUR, Ga. -- Tickets are currently on sale for the keynote address of the 2012 AJC Decatur Book Festival.

Natasha Tretheway will be this year's speaker. She is the current U.S. Poet Laureate, a Pulitzer Prize winner and a professor at Emory University.

Tretheway's address will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31 at Emory's Schwartz Center for Performing Arts.

Tickets are free and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. They can be picked up at Emory's box office, Little Shop of Stories, Eagle Eye Bookshop and Charis Books & More in Little Five Points.

Atlanta Chef/Restaurateur Ford Fry Hosts Fourth Annual JCT. Kitchen Attack of the Killer Tomato Fest

ATLANTA -- On Sunday, July 22 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., JCT. Kitchen & Bar is hosting an event to celebrate some of  the South’s best chefs, farmers and mixologists, who will join forces to benefit Georgia Organics in the fourth annual JCT. Kitchen Attack of the Killer Tomato Festival.

Tickets are now on sale and cost $60 per person ($50 for Georgia Organics members). Beginning June 15, tickets will cost $70 per person. Tickets can be purchased online through Xorbia. A total of 1,400 tickets will be available for attendees. Last year’s festival raised close to $40,000 for Georgia Organics.
