Buckhead Heritage Sponsors Civil War Battlefield Archaeology Lecture

As part of the Sesquicentennial Commemoration of the Civil War, Buckhead Heritage will host archaeologist Garrett Silliman for a lecture on the cutting-edge field of battlefield archaeology. “Digging Up Civil War History: Battlefield Archaeology of the Atlanta Campaign” will be held Thursday, May 12, at 7 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Child Hall at 2744 Peachtree Road. Drinks will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for Buckhead Heritage Society members or $15 for non-members.

The event is being generously sponsored by the Buckhead offices of Harry Norman, Realtors.

Battlefield archaeology utilizes startling precise technology to help historians better understand the everyday life of soldiers during war and the events that transpired on the field of conflict.

ATLANTA – Tomorrow, all Great American Cookie locations will be giving away, free samples of their new Turtle and Red Velvet brownie flavors this Tuesday, March 15th. This giveaway is being held in conjunction with the company’s new contest looking for the “Great American Mom”.

The “Great American Mom” search is a nationwide search for mom’s to spotlight on Mother’s Day. The contest will open for entries starting March 15th and will continue through May 10th. To enter the contest, participants will be asked to compose a 200 word statement on what makes their mother a “Great American Mom”.

Winners will be announced in June when one Grand Prize winner will receive a luxurious Four Seasons spa getaway weekend for Mom and a guest plus a $1,000 travel voucher.

DRUID HILLS – Hurry up and get your tickets for the 2011 OLPA Gala “Dream in Green” Benefit, proceeds go to Olmsted Linear Park. This event will be held at Fernbark Natural History Museum on March 6th from 7-10 p.m.

This event will feature a live and silent auction, live jazz, signature cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres. About 350 community members are anticipated from influential Atlanta intown neighborhoods.

The Olmsted Linear Park Gala is celebrating completion of the restoration of the historic Olmsted Linear Park along Ponce de Leon Avenue. Join your neighbors and friends at this “Dream in Green” evening of live music and fabulous food and specialty.

Round Two Community Development Plan Meetings Get Underway in March

Would you like to see more retail districts, parks or pedestrian-friendly options in your community?  Would you like to give your input on how much industrial land is set aside where you live or work?  The City of Atlanta is inviting non-profits, civic and community groups, neighborhood associations, citizens and businesses to attend the March 2011 community meetings for the City of Atlanta Community Development Plan (CDP) that begins March 1. 

Nearly 200 attendees participated in the first round of 2011 CDP community meetings and had an opportunity to give input on the future plans for their Atlanta neighborhoods.  The Department of Planning and Community Development’s Office of Planning has announced it is hosting the second round of CDP community meetings. All meetings are from 6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M., with the exception of the March 10th meeting, which is from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.

ATLANTA -- Admission is free for Fulton County residents with I.D. on the first Saturday of each month. Students attending college or university in Fulton Country will also be admitted free with a valid college ID.

Fulton Free Saturdays are sponsored by the Fulton County Arts Council. Major funding for this organization is provided by the Fulton County Commissioners under the guidance of the Fulton County Arts Council. Admission includes special exhibitions and permanent collection.

DeKalb Citizens to Hold Community Meeting Feb. 16

SCOTTDALE, GA -- Residents of Scottdale are holding a community meeting at the Tobie Grant Recreation Center (644 Parkdale Drive, 30079) on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 6:45 p.m.

The meeting will address DeKalb County citizens' concerns about the proposed closing of the recreation center.

Tobie Grant Recreation Center is a 14-acre facility that includes a multi-use field, swimming pool, playground and nature trails. It is one of five public spaces that the county is slated to close in order to save money.
