The Youth Empowerment Breakfast (YEB) with Congressman Lewis on July 9th

Dekalb County --  (from the desk of Commissioner Sharon Barnes)  DeKalb County Commissioner Sharon Barnes Sutton will host the second annual Youth Empowerment Breakfast, Saturday, July 9, 2011, at the Holiday Inn Downtown Decatur, 130 Clairemont Avenue, Decatur, Georgia 30030.  The breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. and event proceeds will benefit the Youth Leadership Academy.  The attire is business.

I am especially honored that Congressman John Lewis, who has represented Georgia’s 5th Congressional District since 1986, has agreed to bring remarks at our second, annual Youth Empowerment Breakfast”, said DeKalb County Commissioner Sharon Barnes-Sutton.  Congressman Lewis was granted the 2010 Medal of Freedom award by President Barack Obama earlier this year.

“The Medal of Freedom is the ‘highest award any civilian can attain’.   I look forward to his motivational remarks to our Youth Leadership Academy participants.   Congressman Lewis was born the son of sharecroppers, joined the Civil Rights Movement after hearing Dr. Martin Luther King speak on the radio and catapulted to receiving the Medal of Freedom Award from our great country’s first African-American president.  What young people need to keep in mind is that anything is possible when you take a stand, are committed to your cause and help others”, Barnes-Sutton continued.

The Youth Leadership Academy is an initiative proposed and developed by Commissioner Sharon Barnes-Sutton to meet the needs of youth through education, enrichment, community service and leadership development.  The program began ________ years ago and the 2011-2012 boasts its first graduating class of _______ students from Redan and Stephenson High Schools.
