Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta Announces Missy Dugan as Interim President & CPO

ATLANTA – (BGCMA) Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta (BGCMA), a non-profit focused on youth development for metro Atlanta children, today announced Missy Dugan as the Interim President and Chief Professional Officer (CPO). Dugan will succeed William Lampley, who recently resigned as President and CPO.

Dugan was most recently the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for BGCMA, where she managed organization operations for 26 Clubs. She also served in the role of Vice President of Development and Marketing for BGCMA and has been with the organization more than four years. Dugan has experience in operations, marketing and development through her years of work in the Boys & Girls Clubs organization.

DeKalb County Commission to Vote on Recreation Center Closures

In an effort to balance the county’s budget, the DeKalb County Parks and Recreation Department has proposed that the Board of Commission close five of the counties recreation centers. The centers proposed for closure are:

  • The Tobie Grant Recreation Center located at 644 Parkdale Drive in Scottdale.
  • The Briarwood Recreation Center located at 2235 Briarwood Way in East Atlanta.
  • The NH Scott Recreation Center located at 2230 Tilson Road in Decatur.
  • The Mason Mill Recreation Center located at 1340 Mcconnell Drive in Decatur.
  • The Lucious Sanders Recreation Center located at 2484 Bruce Street in Lithonia.

However, until the commission actually votes on these proposed closures, the centers will continue to operate, as usual. These closings were proposed along with a tax increase of $2.32 million.

DeKalb County Appoints new Chief Financial Officer, Human Resources Director

DECATUR – DeKalb County has named appointments to fill vacancies in two county departments. Joel Gottlieb was named Chief Financial Officer and Benita Ransom was named Director of Human Resources.

Gottlieb has extensive experience in the finance field as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Queens College, a master’s in Public Administration from Ohio State University and a master’s in Urban and Regional Planning from Ohio State University. He has also served as Assistant Director of Finance for DeKalb County since 1996 and most recently as Interim Chief Financial Officer for the county.

Ransom has extensive experience in the human resources field as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from Fisk University and a master’s in Business Administration (Management) from Boston University.

Druid Hill Civic Association To Hold Board Meeting, January 19th

On Wednesday, January 19th, the Druid Hill Civic Association will hold a board meeting at 1784 North Decatur Road on the campus of Emory University. Topics to be discussed include: the Publix-Georgia Marathon, The Tour of Homes and the Parents Network.

The meeting will be held at 7:30 in the large glass building on the corner of Burlington up the hill from the law school. Members will meet in Room 155 at 7pm for refreshments.

‘Tis the season for giving back and Atlanta Hawk forward Josh Powell is doing that with his 2010 Holiday Toy Giveaway (21 Reasons to Give). On Tuesday, December 21st, Powell will be presenting approximately 150 toys to patients at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

On Tuesday, December 21st, Atlanta Hawks Forward Josh Powell will be "I'm very excited for this event," said Hawks Forward Josh Powell. "The holiday season is very special to me. As a professional athlete and father, I feel it's very important to give   back to the community. Spending quality time, meeting the kids and parents, hopefully putting a smile on their faces, it makes it all worth it."

The 21 Reasons to Give Foundation would like to give a special thank you to Toys R Us.

2010 Angel Tree Program Distribution Locations

 2010 Angel Tree Program Distribution Locations

Over the next few days, The Salvation Army staff and volunteers will sort and label the thousands of new holiday toys, clothing and other gift items that were donated by metro Atlanta  residents to local children in need.

From December 15 - December 21, The Salvation Army Metro Atlanta will wrap up its 2010 Angel Tree program with toy distributions to the families of over 10,000 local children low-income households.

The parents of the registered children will arrive at pre-scheduled times to receive their holiday gift items that range from new bikes, dolls and doll-houses, to hats, scarves, and other warm-weather items.
