'Be a fan': Special Olympics Georgia State Summer Games this weekend

EMORY, Ga. -- Special Olympics of Georgia (SOGA) will host its annual State Summer Games for more than 2,000 athletes and coaches this weekend at Emory University.

Athletes will compete in aquatic events, flag football, soccer, badminton, volleyball, tennis, gymnastics and more, with medals awarded throughout the events.

"It is great to see the athletes have the perfect opportunity to shine at Summer Games," said SOGA CEO Georgia Milton-Sheats. "The athletes have worked very hard leading up to this weekend and will be so excited."

A Law Enforcement Torch Run press conference will be held at the State Capitol at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 20.

“Hike and Bike” through Davidson-Arabia Mountain

DECATUR, Ga. – Residents biked through a portion of Davidson-Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve in Lithonia on Saturday, May 14 during the CEO’s Hike and Bike Greenspace Tour.

The walkers and bike riders joined Ellis for the four-mile walk and six-mile bike ride, which began at Candler Murphy Elementary School.

Event sponsors include CH2M Hill, Kaiser Permanente and Bike South.  A drawing for free bicycles donated by Bike South was held during the event, and hike and bike participants also had the opportunity to visit the nature center to learn more about the preserve.

According to DeKalb CEO Ellis, “We have some of the most beautiful green spaces here in DeKalb. Not only is it free, but simply getting out and visiting our parks can have positive impact on our health and the health of county.”

ATLANTA – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

Come out to the Taste of the Highlands, tickets sales end on May 13 at noon but the festival starts on Saturday, May 14 from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. in the Highlands. The Kirkwood Spring Fling and Tour of Homes/5K Road Race will begin on Saturday, May 14 and continue until May 15. This is Kirkwood’s ninth annual festival; the festival features an open air artist market, a concert, a children’s area, food vendors and plenty of fellowship with neighbors. Every year, volunteers set up chairs on Emory University's quad to prepare for commencement.  This year, I put together a time-lapse video of 90 volunteers setting up 14,000 chairs.  It took three hours to do it, and you can watch it all in one minute.

WEEKEND EVENTS: Atlanta Gives Back, Pet Parade, Dead Prez

ATLANTA – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

Join 11Alive and the Atlanta Humane Society for the 21st Annual Pet Parade on Saturday, May 7. The parade starts at Piedmont Park at 11:00 a.m. and features 11Alive’s own, John Gerard and Chesley McNeil as the Grand Marshalls. Registration for pets starts at 9:00 a.m. and the event ends around 1:00 p.m. Registration for a pet and a parent is $35, on Saturday morning. Piedmont Park is located at 1071 Piedmont Avenue in Atlanta.

Revolutionary hip-hop duo, Dead Prez will headline a concert at Masquerade on Friday, May 6. The two-some, composed of stic.man and M-1 are known for their “raw” and “in-your-face” style of lyricism.

Want to do some shopping that’s good to your heart and your pockets? Visit the Attic Treasures Thrift Shop. This non-profit thrift shop is owned and operated by the Assistance League of Atlanta which helps senior citizens. The store sells gently used clothing, household items, books, jewelry and collectibles. Most items are priced between $3 and $10. The store is located at 3534 Broad Street in Chamblee.
