Grady names new VP of government relations

ATLANTA -- Matthew Hicks will join Grady Health System as its new vice president of government relations, the hospital announced Wednesday.

In his new role, Hicks will manage relationships between Grady and its government partners. He brings more than a decade of relevant experience to the job.

Hicks began his career working on social services and healthcare matters for U.S. Senator Zell Miller. He is also a certified emergency medical technician.

A DeKalb County native, Hicks earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Emory University.

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- Consumers knew better deals were coming on Black Friday and held back on spending until the end of November, according to First Data's latest SpendTrend report.

The privately held Sandy Springs-based electronic payments company reported year-over-year dollar volume growth was up 7.3 percent in November, down from October's 9.4 percent jump.

Dollar volume growth was 8.1 percent, while transaction growth was 6.1 percent in November.

Emory has $5B impact on Georgia

ATLANTA -- Emory University has a $5.1 billion impact on Georgia's economy, according to a study the school commissioned to mark its 175th anniversary.

The university is the fourth-largest private employer in Metro Atlanta and supports about 50,000 jobs statewide, according to the analysis by New York-based economic analysis firm Appleseed Inc.

In fiscal 2010, Emory University, which includes Emory Healthcare, spent more than $2.5 billion on payroll, purchasing and construction. Emory researchers generated $450 million in sponsored research spending and were awarded $535 million in new research funding.

Total awards rose to nearly $540 million in fiscal 2011.

Emory said it plans to spend more than $780 million in construction and renovation projects for both the university and healthcare system over the next five years.

State tax credit program raises $50M for scholarships

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Revenue stamped its approval on $50 million in donations under the Georgia Scholarship Tax Credit Program.

The program lets people and businesses get tax credit for donations to scholarships for Georgia children to attend private schools.

Fifty million dollars is the most allowed under the program. In 2012, the statewide cap on donations will increase by the annual increase in the Consumer Price Index until 2018.

Individuals can donate up to $1,000, while married couples have a donation cap of $2,500. Corporations can donate up to 75 percent of their state income tax liability.

The American Federation for Children estimated more than 6,000 students last year got scholarships to attend private schools through the program.
