More storms eye Metro Atlanta

More storms eye Metro Atlanta

ATLANTA -- Another band of showers and storms will likely move into Metro Atlanta Thursday evening.  Showers and storms will become more widely scattered than Wednesday's storms, but a few storms will still be capable of packing a wallop with locally heavy rainfall, gusty winds, hail, and frequent lightning.

The forecast is calling for a general risk for a strong thunderstorm or two across northern and central Georgia.  However the Storm Prediction Center has placed a small portion of eastern Georgia in a slight risk zone for severe storms.

Forecast models indicate the possibility for new rainfall totals ranging from 1/4" to 3/4" rainfall and isolated spots receiving over 2 inches by Friday morning.

City pensions under consideration Thursday afternoon

City pensions under consideration Thursday afternoon

ATLANTA - For Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, there is no more important issue for the city than pensions. As much as 20 cents from every dollar goes to pensions in the city, and the city is finding it cannot afford them.

The ongoing wrangling over pensions has gone on since Reed took office, and now a deal may finally be in the works.

Two city council members have had separate proposals up to this point, but they have now come together with what they are calling a city plan, which they say will save the city about $215 million over the next ten years.

The NAACP and members of the Atlanta Fire Department came together last week on the steps of City Hall to voice their displeasure at the plans under consideration.

Two firefighters speaking during the public comment portion of Thursday's council meeting called the so-called city plan, the optimal plan for addressing all of the objectives that are on the table.

DeKalb unemployment exceeds Georgia rate in May

DeKalb unemployment exceeds Georgia rate in May

ATLANTA -- The unemployment rate in Metro Atlanta rose to 9.7 percent in May 2011, according to Georgia labor commissioner Mark Butler.

This is up one-tenth of a percentage point from a revised 9.6 percent in April.

Butler said the rate rose for two reasons. More than 21,000 new job seekers entered the labor force, but only about 15,000 of them found jobs. Also, Atlanta had a net loss of 900 jobs; an increase of 1,100 jobs in manufacturing and construction was offset by a loss of 2,000 service-related jobs.

The lowest area unemployment rate, at 7.2 percent, was recorded in Metro Athens, while the highest was in the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region in the Dublin area, at 12 percent.

DeKalb County's unemployment rate was 10.1 percent.

May marked the 46th consecutive month Georgia has exceeded the national unemployment rate, which is currently 9.1 percent, up from 9 percent in April.
